What is ombré?

Ombré is a graduated colour effect where your natural roots blend gradually into noticeably lighter ends — a soft top-to-bottom fade rather than an all-over dye.

Because the depth stays close to your natural colour at the root, ombré grows out gently with no harsh regrowth line. It’s a favourite for anyone who wants a real change with brightness through the mid-lengths and tips, without committing to full-head colour or frequent salon visits.

“Your roots stay natural and low-maintenance while your ends do all the talking.”

Ombré vs balayage — what’s the difference?

They’re cousins, not twins. Ombré is a more defined vertical fade — darker up top, distinctly lighter at the ends. Balayage is a freehand painting technique that weaves lightness through the hair for a more scattered, natural sun-kissed finish.

Not sure which is right for you? If you’d prefer that softer, blended, grow-out-gracefully look, take a look at our balayage service — or just message us and we’ll guide you at your consultation.

Who ombré suits

Ombré works beautifully on most hair types and lengths, and is ideal if you want to:

• Add brightness and dimension without touching your roots • Keep your maintenance schedule relaxed • Test the waters before going lighter all over • Refresh long or mid-length hair with a modern, lived-in finish.

How we create your ombré

1

Consultation & strand test

We assess your hair’s history, tone and condition and agree on your target shade before we begin.

2

Colour placement

We lighten from the mid-lengths down, blending carefully so the transition looks seamless, never blocky.

3

Toning & gloss

A custom toner refines the ends to the exact tone you want — cool, warm or neutral — with a glossy finish.

4

Style & aftercare

We finish with a style and talk you through simple aftercare to keep your colour bright for longer.

Ombré pricing

Colour is tailored to your hair, so final pricing is confirmed at your consultation. As a guide:

Full ColourR650 – R950
Toner / GlossR550 – R700
Root TintR300 – R650

Prices exclude blow-dry. See our full price list for cuts, balayage and treatments.

Keeping your ombré fresh

Because your roots stay natural, ombré is refreshingly low-maintenance — most clients only need a gloss or toner top-up every few months rather than a full appointment. Wash with sulphate-free, colour-safe products, use a purple shampoo once a week if your ends are blonde, and protect against heat to keep the tone clean and the ends healthy.

Ombré FAQs

How long does an ombré appointment take?

Most colour appointments run around one to two hours depending on your hair’s length, thickness and starting colour.

Will ombré damage my hair?

We lighten carefully and always do a strand test first. Because the roots are left natural, less of your hair is processed than with all-over colour, and we finish with conditioning care.

How often will I need to come back?

Ombré is low-maintenance — the natural root means no harsh regrowth line, so many clients stretch to a few months between refreshes, usually just a gloss or toner.

Can I go from dark to bright blonde ends in one visit?

Sometimes, but dramatic lifts on dark hair may need more than one session to protect the hair. We’ll map out a realistic plan at your consultation.
